Dropsy in Betta Fish: Pathology, Early Symptoms, and Targeted Treatment Protocols

Dropsy is a symptom of organ failure, not a single disease. Learn to spot the pinecone stage early and apply an isolation-and-treatment protocol that actually helps.

What dropsy actually is

Dropsy describes fluid retention in the body cavity, usually caused by kidney or internal organ failure — often triggered by a bacterial infection (Aeromonas). The classic sign is a swollen belly with scales protruding like a pinecone.

Early symptoms

  • Loss of appetite and lethargy.
  • Slightly raised scales visible from above.
  • Clamped fins and rapid gill movement.

Treatment protocol

  1. Isolate the fish in a clean quarantine tank immediately.
  2. Add aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 L) to reduce osmotic stress.
  3. Keep water at a stable 27–28°C with gentle filtration.
  4. Dose a broad-spectrum aquatic antibiotic per label instructions.

Caught at the earliest raised-scale stage, recovery is possible. Once fully pineconed, prognosis is poor — prevention through clean water is the real cure.
